Dr Simon Adelman

Dr Adelman is a consultant psychiatrist, specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders in older people. He qualified as a doctor from King’s College London in 1996 and completed his specialist psychiatric training in 2007. He has dual accreditation with the GMC, to practice general adult and old age psychiatry.

Through research, Dr Adelman gained a PhD in dementia in 2010 and has several journal publications. He has run a unit for clinical trials investigating new drugs for Alzheimer’s disease and was Director of the North London Dementia and Neurodegenerative Disorders Research Network for four years. Dr Adelman is highly committed to education and training and was academic lead for undergraduate psychiatry at University College London (UCL) between 2014 and 2018. Dr Adelman’s most recent NHS consultant post was with Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust, between 2010 and 2021. There, he ran an in-patient unit for older adults with mental disorders. He has extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of complex mental illnesses and dementia. He is now the Medical Director of Halcyon Doctors.

She is a peer reviewer in Memory Services National Accreditation Programme (MSNAP) of The Royal College of Psychiatrists which inspects and approves accreditation of memory services across the country. Dr Agrawal is also a peer reviewer of Acute Inpatient Mental Health Services – Older People (AIMS-OP) of The Royal College of Psychiatrists, which provides accreditation to inpatients services across the country. Dr Agrawal is interested in the area of doctor’s health. She is a GMC approved Health Examiner and Medical Supervisor for doctors who may have health problems. Dr Agrawal also represents older adult psychiatry directorate as a member of Local Negotiating Committee (LNC) in her own organization, EPUT. As a Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Agrawal has had a wide range of experience in overseeing services including older adult inpatient ward and older adult community mental health team. She runs the Memory Service in Basildon. Dr Agrawal has experience in the diagnosis and management of cognitive disorders and the psychiatric and behavioural symptoms which commonly accompany these conditions. Dr Kit Akass graduated with his medical degree from the University of East Anglia in 2012. Following completing Foundation Training in York and North Lincolnshire he completed his core psychiatry in North Yorkshire before competing Higher Specialist Training in General Adult Psychiatry with an endorsement in Liaison Psychiatry in the South West London and St George’s scheme.

He acted up as a consultant in an Early Intervention in Psychosis service before completing his training. Since completing his training in August 2020 he has worked as a consultant liaison psychiatrist at St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey. As part of his NHS role he works sees a wide variety of presentations, including perinatal psychiatry, eating disorders and neuropsychiatric presentations. Dr Akass is involved in teaching and since 2021 has been the Training Programme Director for the Core Psychiatry training scheme covering Kent. He was previously the chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrist’s liaison faculty’s Trainees and New Consultant’s committee.

Dr Hema Ananth qualified from UCL in 1995 and has now been established as a Consultant Psychiatrist for 15 years. She completed her Psychiatric training on the Royal Free Training Scheme.

Hema was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2012 for her contribution to Psychiatry. She is Dual Accredited in Old Age and General Adult Psychiatry and has an endorsement in Liaison. She has published several papers and contributed to the Oxford Textbook of Elderly Psychiatry. Her NHS work is in Hertfordshire, where she has been the Lead for the local Memory Service. This involves close work with the Alzheimer’s Society, with whom she has been involved in a voluntary capacity. She routinely cares for patients with dementia, bipolar, depressive and psychotic conditions. She is the Chair of the Herts Old Age Psychiatry Group and also sits on the Ethics Executive. She has been involved in private practice for 12 years. Hema is actively involved in Medical Education of Junior Doctors and is a Tutor and recently completed a Masters in Medical Education. She was elected Secretary of the Psychiatry Council at The Royal Society of Medicine where she promotes Psychiatry and inputs into conferences. She is part of the panel at the Royal College of Psychiatrists responsible for setting the MRPsych exam paper. Alistair Burns is Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at The University of Manchester and an Honorary Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist in the Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

He graduated in medicine from Glasgow University in 1980, training in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital and Institute of Psychiatry in London. He became the Foundation Chair of Old Age Psychiatry in The University of Manchester in 1992, where he has variously been Head of the Division of Psychiatry and a Vice Dean in the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences, with responsibility for liaison within the NHS. He set up the Memory Clinic in Manchester and helped establish the old age liaison psychiatry service at Wythenshawe Hospital. He is a Past President of the International Psychogeriatric Association. He was Editor of the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry for twenty years, (retiring in 2017) and is on the Editorial Boards of the British Journal of Psychiatry and International Psychogeriatrics. His research and clinical interests are in mental health problems of older people, particularly dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. He has published over 300 papers and 25 books. He was made an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2016, received the lifetime achievement award from their old age Faculty in 2015 and was awarded the CBE in 2016 for contributions to health and social care, in particular dementia.

Dr Efiong Ephraim is a Consultant in Older Adult Psychiatry and Clinical Lead for North Kent and Medway Older Adult Mental Health Services.

He graduated in medicine in 1997, gained Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2005 and Certificate of Completion of Training (specialist in Older Adult Psychiatry) in 2008. Efiong has been a consultant in the NHS since 2009, working with the Nottinghamshire Trust, and since 2012 works for the Kent and Medway Partnership Trust. His responsibilities include direct clinical care, diagnosis and management of adults with dementia, and he is also experienced in depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and treatment-resistant generalised anxiety disorders. His expertise includes medico-legal work and the application of the Mental Capacity Act. He runs a regular weekly Memory and Functional Clinic, supported by the Dartford, Gravesend and Swanley Community Mental Health Team. She is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and is on the specialist register of the Psychiatry of Intellectual disabilities for the General Medical Council. She holds full registration and License to practice. Her qualifications include Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. She also has a CCST (Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training) in Psychiatry of Intellectual Disabilities obtained in 2012. Dr Gazizova had specialist training in assessment and diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder (Autism diagnostic observation schedule [ADOS]), and the Developmental, Dimensional and Diagnostic Interview (3di) and regularly conducts structured autism assessments. She a member of Neurodevelopmental disorders Special Interest Group (SIG) of RCPsych. She regularly assesses mental health needs, capacity and manages complex psychiatric presentations in people with intellectual disabilities in the community and inpatient settings. Dr Gazizova has published articles in peer reviewed journals of international repute. She is Approved under section 12(2) of MHA and also an Approved Clinician (AC). Dr Gazizova currently has an honorary role within the Royal College of Psychiatrists as their Deputy Regional Advisor (London Division). Dr Senthil Subramanian is a Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in the mental health of older adults. He gained accreditation in older adult psychiatry from the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2013 and was appointed as a Consultant Psychiatrist for Older Adults at Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust since 2014. He also has a MD in psychiatry from India and has been practising psychiatry since 2000.

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, he has a wide range of experience in assessing and treating older people with memory problems, depression and anxiety. He manages an older adult community mental health team caring for people in Winchester and surrounding areas. He also provides support for local GPs, providing integrated care for their patients as well as supporting careers and families of patients with Dementia. Dr Subramanian has special interest in assessing memory problems in younger adults and in patients with Parkinson’s disease. He has extensive experience in the diagnosis, treatment and management of functional mental illnesses such as mood disorders and psychosis.
